Superpowers!

During a meal, ask your family:

If you could have any superpower, what power would you like to have?

Why would you like to have that power?

How would you use your power to help others?

Superheroes and super powers are just pretend – make-believe stories. But God is real and has unlimited power. He can do miracles.

What is a miracle? (A miracle is a work of God that defies the normal laws of nature; it is something extraordinary that could not have happened without God’s help; etc.)

Read 2 Kings 2: 1-22.

What miracles did God do for Elisha? (He split the Jordan River so Elisha could walk across it; He made the poisonous water clean; He supplied oil for the widow and her two sons; He made an ax head float.)

What are some miracles God does for us? (He answers our prayers; He forgives our sin; He provides what we need; He gives us eternal life; etc.)

Power!

Items Needed: Regular balloon and helium balloon

Share a simple object lesson about God’s power inside us.

Blow up and tie the regular balloon. Ask a family member to try to keep it in the air without holding on to it until you say stop. The balloon will fall to the ground.

Hold up helium balloon and ask someone to keep it in the air (easy to do).

Can you make any comparisons between the two balloons and people who do or do not have God, the Holy Spirit living inside them? (This may be tough or you may be surprised at their insight.)

Let’s say that this regular balloon is like people who do not have God’s power through the Holy Spirit living inside. These people depend on themselves and try to do what is right. They may be able to do what is right for a while, but eventually they stop trying and fail.

This helium balloon is like someone who has the Holy Spirit living inside. God fills him (let go of string) with His power and helps him to do what he cannot on his own. God’s power is far greater than ours and He will help us do what is right.

Read 2 Corinthians 12:9-10.

We must learn to stop trusting in our own week efforts and rely completely on the ONE whose power is made perfect in our weakness.

Pray together and encourage family members to ask God for help in trusting His power ever day.

Wow, God!
