Backwards Day
Plan a backwards day (or evening) for your family. Eat dessert first. Have breakfast for supper. Ask the blessing after you eat. Read the last page of a storybook first. Wear pajamas to play in and play clothes to bed. Try saying some words and sentences backward, and say “good morning” instead of “goodnight.” This will give you opportunities to talk about the way God designed order in our days and in our thoughts. He gave us our minds so that we can learn and communicate and imagine and resolve. Thank God for the way your brain works!
What’s It For?
Look in the kitchen drawer (or office) and find some items your kids may not recognize or know their purpose. Some ideas: strawberry huller, melon baller, sifter, hand can opener, etc. Ask them to guess the purpose of each item.
Each of these items was created with specific features and abilities to achieve an intended result. There is a reason each item was created. God created each of us with specific features and abilities too. He has a purpose for every person created. Have you ever stopped to consider that the same God who created the whole world also created you?
Do you know what part of our bodies controls every other part? Encourage kids to respond and give clues as needed. Share some facts about the human brain with your family. Write them on separate slips of paper and allow each family member to read one if you have readers who like to participate.
- The brain weighs about 3 pounds. It is about 6 inches long, 5½ inches wide, and almost 4 inches deep.
- The brain stops growing when you are 18 years old but it keeps developing and learning new things.
- The brain produces enough electricity to power a light bulb!
- There are about 100 billion tiny little cells in our brains. They are called neurons. There are so many neurons that it would take you over 3,000 years just to count them all!
- The brain sends information to the body at speeds of more than 150 miles per hour. Motor neurons can send information faster than 200 miles per hour when needed.
- The brain sends more messages than all the phones in the entire world.
- The right side of the brain talks to the left side of your body, and the left side of the brain talks to the right side of your body.
- The skull is made up of 22 bones that are all joined together to keep our amazing brains safe and sound!
Each of us is a special creation of God with a mind that can make choices to obey and honor Him every day. Let’s pray together now for our amazing God to help each of us use our minds the way He intended them to be used.
Color Tricks
Before you gather your family together, prepare some flash cards. Write the word red with a blue marker. Write the word yellow with a purple marker. Write the word blue with a green marker. Make at least 8 cards.
I will show you the cards one after the other and we will see if you can correctly read the words on the cards before the timer runs out. Or you can time each person and see who does it the quickest. To keep others from having an advantage, only the person attempting to read in each round should see the cards. Have fun with it and adjust as needed for non-readers. Perhaps they can help keep time or flip the cards over.
What made that hard? Encourage response. If you practiced this several times, it would be easier. God created our minds to be very intricate. At the same time you were attempting to read the words, your brain was interpreting the color it was seeing. That created a natural confusion that required extra concentration to say it correctly.
