Splinks for the week of February 16-22, 2020

Food for Thought

Introduce the idea that our mind needs good thoughts just like our body needs good food. Give everyone access to crayons or markers and blank paper. Give each person a category to illustrate and then see how everyone does with guessing what others have drawn.

Categories to consider:

  • Your favorite food
  • What you would want if you could only eat one thing for a week
  • What you like for breakfast
  • Your favorite snack
  • Two vegetables you like
  • A food you hope you never have to eat again
  • A favorite cold item

Some foods are healthy options and others should only be eaten occasionally. French fries are not poisonous, but if that were all you ate for a week you would probably feel sick. Our bodies need good, healthy choices consistently in order to grow the way God intends.

We need to apply that same truth to what we put into our minds.

Some thoughts will make you smarter and happier. Some thoughts are like junk food: not too bad but you don’t want to fill up on those thoughts. Other thoughts are poisonous and we should stay away from them.

Read Romans 12:2 and discuss how God and His Word are helpful when filling our minds with good things.

Real Transformers!

Thanks to fairytales and transformer toys, most kids understand the concept of transformation. Discuss some examples to be sure everyone is on the same page.

Did you know the Bible teaches we can transform our minds with God’s help? Read Romans 12:1-2 together and talk about the process of transformation—becoming a living sacrifice, refusing to be put into the world’s mold, and renewing our thinking. Give your kids some popcorn kernels and ask if they want to eat them the way they are or after they are transformed? Make some popcorn together (not the easy microwave method) so the transformation of the kernels is more easily distinguished for the kids. Enjoy the snack together and discuss how popcorn is like our minds!

Spot It!

Play a little game to see if your kids can pick out the change each one makes in their appearance. Ask each person to find a partner and look carefully at one another. Then have them turn their back and make a simple change. (It can be as simple as putting a strand of hair behind their ear or rolling up a sleeve.) When they turn around, see if their partner can tell what has been changed. Pick new partners and play a few more rounds.

Was it hard or easy to see the change?

Could someone tell by your behavior that you are a follower of Christ?

The Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible and He can use that to help you know the right way to live. Every time you say no to your own selfish way and yes to the Holy Spirit, you transform and have more of the mind of Christ.
