The Treasure

Fill a plastic container with sand/uncooked rice/uncooked beans, etc. and hide coins (or little toys) inside the container. (It would ideal for each child to have his own container, but you can use one container and add coins/toys after each child finds the treasure.) Adapt this to fit what you have available. You could also hide several small containers (plastic eggs?) with a coin in each.

Each of you found a small treasure. What is a treasure? (Something good, something valuable). We have a treasure inside us. Read 2 Corinthians 4:7. This verse says Christians have a valuable treasure inside their earthen vessels (their bodies). In Bible times, a vessel was a container to hold something. Every follower of Jesus has this wonderful treasure inside. The real treasure was what was inside the container—the power of God. God’s power made it possible for Paul to do all that he did (traveling all over the world telling people about Jesus, writing books of the New Testament including 2 Corinthians, etc.). We are containers for God and He is the treasure inside us.

Hidden in Plain Sight

Use a flashlight to find objects. Choose an item to “hide” (book, toy, stuffed animal, whatever you like)—just make sure everyone sees it. Send one family member out of the room and choose another one to place the item in plain sight. Call the finder into the room, flip off the light, and ask him to find the item. (He must shine the flashlight around the room until he finds the “hidden” item.) Flip the light on and choose a new hider and finder.

The chosen item was not really hidden, but you couldn’t see it in the dark. What helped you find it? (the flashlight). When you shined the light in the darkness, you could see the object.

Read 2 Corinthians 4:6. Those who do not believe in Jesus cannot see or understand the truth about Jesus. The same God who said, “Let there be light” at creation has shined His light in our hearts so we can see and understand who Jesus is. We weren’t looking for God, but He was looking for us. When we believe in Jesus and accept what He did on the cross, God gives us a new life.

Temporary or Eternal?

Blow bubbles (using homemade or pre-made bubble solution) to talk about how short trouble is compared to the permanence of Heaven. Blow the bubbles and count to see how long it takes each one to pop.

The bubbles popped very quickly. Do you know what else is temporary? (Troubles; problems, etc.)

Many of the believers in Corinth were facing some hard times, but Paul (the writer of 2 Corinthians) reminded them to never give up (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). The things we see physically with our eyes that cause pain or trouble are just temporary and will soon be gone (not quite as quickly as the bubbles). The troubles we have on this earth cannot compare to the lasting joy we will have in Heaven.
