Amazing Numbers

Write each of the following numbers on an index card (or piece of paper): 66; 39; 27; 40; 1500; 773,692; 70. Lay the numbers on the table and see if the kids can pick the correct numbers for the following facts about the Bible.

  • The word Bible comes from the Greek word Biblia, which literally means “books.”
  • The Bible actually contains 66 books in two parts:
  • The Old Testament has 39 books and the New Testament has 27.
  • God directed over 40 different men from many different occupations (kings, fishermen, doctor, poets, scholar, etc.) to write the Bible.
  • It was written over a 1500 year span (from 1400 B.C to A.D. 100).
  • The Bible contains about 773, 692 words! It would take you approximately 70 hours to read the whole Bible out loud.

The Bible is 100% God’s words to man so we can know God and what He wants for us.

Who Wrote It?

After reading a book with your kids, read the information about the author.

After reading the Bible, ask: Who is the author of the Bible?

God is the author of the Bible. Holy men were moved by God to write down His words for us to know (2 Peter 1:21). The Bible was written by over 40 men over 1500 years, but it all fits together—why? Because there is only ONE author—God.

OR

Who Wrote It?

Assign your child the “job” of writing a letter to someone. (Is there a thank you note waiting to be written?) Tell him to think of what he wants to say and then say it to you and you will write it down.

Even though I wrote down the words for you, who was the letter really from? (you) The letter contained your thoughts and your words. I only put them down on paper for you.

Read 2 Timothy 3:16a (All Scripture is given by inspiration of God).

Where did the words of the Bible come from? (God)

Inspiration is a big word that means God breathed. The Bible is not the words of different men (Moses, Isaiah, Matthew, Paul, etc.) but are the very words of GOD. The Bible contains His thoughts and His words. Holy men wrote down God’s words so we could know how much He loves us and how we can live with Him forever.

Better Than

Psalm 119:72 says that God’s law (the Bible) is better than thousands of gold and silver. How can the Bible be better than gold and silver?

Write each of the four Bible verse addresses on an index card (or piece of paper. (To make it more of a challenge, cut each index card in half differently so there will only be one way to fit the cards together again.)

Psalm 119:11

Psalm 119:98

Psalm 119:105

Psalm 119:165

Hide each half of the verse in a separate place and invite the kids to find the Bible addresses, match the two halves, and look up the Bible verses to discover why the Bible is better than a treasure. (Optional: Hide a coin with each half of the verse. Or hide a treasure to be found and shared at the end: cookies; cupcakes; small treats or trinkets; etc.)

The God who created the world wants us to know Him and know how to live. God’s Word is better than gold and silver because it will keep you from sin, give you wisdom, help you know the way to live, and give you peace.
