Who Am I?
Write the names of people (fictional or not) on individual slips of paper. Choose random names or select characters from a favorite movie or book. Have family members take turns drawing one of the slips and answering yes and no questions about the name chosen. Very young children might need some help. The goal is to see if the person can be identified within 20 questions.
It’s interesting that we can identify a person based on clues about him or her. The longer we played the game the easier it was to select questions that would help us narrow our options more quickly.
Do you know we can learn a lot about Jesus by looking at various characteristics evidenced in Scripture? For example, in Mark’s account of Jesus calming the storm (Mark 4:35-41) we learn that Jesus and His disciples were sailing away from the crowds in order to give Jesus a much-needed break. Jesus’ need for rest proves His humanity, and His humanity qualifies Him to be our compassionate intercessor (Hebrews 2:17).
The deity of Jesus is also revealed in today’s lesson. Only God can make the winds and water obey. With a simple command from Christ, the storm ended and the sea became calm (Mark 4:39). The apostles were amazed at the power of Jesus (Luke 8:25).
If Jesus can calm the storms of the sea with His voice, He can calm the storms of life as well. Isn’t it amazing we get to serve Jesus, the ruler and Lord over the universe?
Look What I Made!
Provide family members with a set number of pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, or shapes cut from paper. Set a timer and instruct each person to arrange the items to create a known object or a random design. Encourage creativity and champion the efforts of each person. Allow family members to describe their creations for the rest of the group.
Read Colossians 1: 16-17. It’s fun to create things and use our imaginations. We can get a lot of inspiration and ideas from the beautiful creations all around us every day. Jesus created the world and everything in it. What is one of your favorites of His creations? Encourage family members to name an animal, plant, or other aspect of creation. Jesus rules over creation and holds it all together. The more we learn about Jesus the more we will love and trust Him to take care of us.
Worthy of Praise
Lead your family in an intentional week of praise and worship for our Lord Jesus. Choose a different characteristic to focus on each day. Sing, pray, serve, and celebrate what you are learning together about the Lord each day. Challenge family members to individually offer praise and worship to the Lord too.
Suggested verses to read: 1 Chronicles 16:25, Psalm 7:17, Psalm 30:4, Psalm 150:6
Our Lord Jesus deserves our worship. There is no one as wise, powerful, good, and loving as He is. Jesus is worthy of our love and service. He should have first place in our lives.
