Too Busy?
Show your cell phone and ask family members to name the many different uses for this small device.
Sometimes when I text someone, I get a response right away. It’s great that technology allows for such quick communication, but there are times when I don’t get a response for several hours or even several days. Why do you think that happens? Encourage responses. Isn’t it great that God is never too busy? He never has to recharge. He’s never unavailable to us. God answers our prayers every time. We may not always get the answer we hope for, but we can trust that we’ll always get an answer.
Read Jonah 2:1.
Summarize the prayer prayed in verses 2-9 and be sure to reference that Jonah thanked God for saving him and providing the fish.
Read Jonah 2:10.
No matter where we find ourselves, God always hears and answers our prayers—even if the answer isn’t quite what we expected or hoped for. He always knows what’s best.
Hide and Seek!
Play a game of Hide and Seek with your family or take turns hiding an object for family members to find. Play several rounds together.
Have you ever thought about the fact that we are never hidden from God? It is impossible to hide from Him. Jonah learned that when he tried to run from God and disobeyed His command.
Read or summarize (based on the ages of your kids) Jonah 2:1-10. Jonah learned God always hears and answers our prayers. We are never hidden from the Lord or beyond His reach.
Pray together as a family and thank God for His care and for always hearing and answering prayers.
Knock! Knock!
Encourage family members to share their favorite “Knock! Knock” jokes. Be prepared with some for the group use if needed. We are providing two to get you started.
Knock! Knock!
Who’s there?
Kanga.
Kanga who?
Actually, it’s kangaroo.
—-
Knock! Knock!
Who’s there?
Cows go.
Cows go who?
No silly, cows go moo.
If nobody ever replied, “who’s there?” after someone said, “Knock! Knock!” the jokes wouldn’t be that fun, would they? What if God never answered when we prayed to Him? I am thankful we will never have to learn what that feels like because we can count on God to always answer our prayers.
Spend some time sharing ways God has answered prayer for your family and close the time with a prayer of thanksgiving to Him for answering prayer.
