Special Needs Ministry Modified Elementary Curriculum:

DISCUSSION

Monthly Virtue: Kindness—Showing others they are valuable by how you treat them

Memory Verse: You are God’s chosen people. You are holy and dearly loved. So put on tender mercy and kindness as if there were your clothes. Don’t be proud. Be gentle and patient. Colossians 3:12 (NIrV)

Week 1: February 4

Bible Story: Show Me the Way (The Kindness of Jesus) • Matthew 8:1-4, Matthew 19:13-15, Matthew 9:10-13

Key Question: What does kindness look like?

Basic Truth: I am made by God to reflect His Image.

Ask:

  • Jesus showed kindness to people who were unpopular—what makes someone unpopular in your school, team, or neighborhood? What type of kindness might they need or appreciate?
  • Jesus also showed kindness to people who were sad and hurting. Sometimes we try to fix things for people who are going through sadness or pain, and sometimes that doesn’t really help them. What else could demonstrate kindness to them?

Week 2: February 11

Bible Story: Family Ties (Ruth and Naomi) • Ruth 1–2

Key Question: When is it hard to be kind?

Basic Truth: I am loved by God no matter what so I can love God, love others, and love life.

Ask:

  • What can you do to show kindness to your family when they get on your nerves?
  • How can you become more patient with them so those annoyances happen less?
  • What choice can you make next time you’re feeling annoyed by someone you live with?

Week 3: February 18

Bible Story: One More Time (Go the Extra Mile) • Matthew 5:41

Key Question: When have you been surprised by kindness?

Basic Truth: I am loved by God no matter what so I can belong in God’s family forever.

Ask:

  • How do you respond when you have to do something you think is unfair?
  • How can you [Bottom Line] be kinder than you have to be when something like that happens?

Week 4: February 25

Bible Story: Don’t Let Me Down (Good Samaritan) • Luke 10:25-37

Key Question: How can you care for people who are different from you?

Basic Truth: I am made for a purpose so the Holy Spirit will help me do big things now.

Ask:

  • What kind of differences are the most difficult to overcome—those on the outside or inside? Why do you think that?
  • When was the last time you chose to [Bottom Line] be kind to people who are different from you?
