Say Cheese!

This week your children learned about two of Adam and Eve’s sons, Cain and Abel. Remind your child that God created families. Look at several family pictures with your child. Point out different family members, and have your child name them.

Point to their siblings or cousins and ask them if they would marry that person. Talk with them about how it’s considered wrong to marry someone in your own family now. But in the Old Testament, people married within their own families to preserve their nation.

But God made a new law, because it became unhealthy to marry within your family. God wants to protect His people. Cain could marry his sister or niece because it wasn’t against God’s law at that time. But God’s new law tells us we can no longer marry our brothers, sisters, or cousins.

Close your family discussion time by taking a new family picture.

The Love of God

God’s love for us is seen throughout the Bible. Do you know what makes God’s love so special? God’s love is everlasting! Nothing can separate us from God’s love, and we need to share God’s love with others. How do we share God’s love with others?

Write each of the following scenarios on an index card or piece of paper. Give everyone a heart cut out of red construction paper. As you read the statements, instruct each member of your family to hold up his or her heart if the statement is an example of love.

Living in Heaven with Jesus some day

Using unkind words

Jesus taking the punishment for our sin

Making a card for someone who is sick

Being selfish with my toys

Baking cookies for a friend

God is the best example of perfect love. We can show our love for Him through our words and actions. Close your time in prayer, thanking God for His love and asking Him to help each of you love others well.

Our Family

Make a family shield. Pass out copy or construction paper and markers, and invite your child to draw a large shield. Divide it into sections and let him or her draw interests and items associated with your family. Does your family love animals? enjoy sports? enjoy books? love camping?

(Optional idea for older kids is to research the family name.)

What is the best thing about being part of this family?

Why is it important to live in a way that honors our family name?

God gave us the gift of family. No family is perfect. Remember the first family? Adam and Eve made many mistakes, and so did their children. But did God’s love end with their sin? No, God’s love is forever. God gave us a family, and because of Jesus’ death on the cross, we are a part of His family too. We must love one another and share the love of God with others as well! Spend a few minutes in prayer thanking God for your family and asking Him to help each of you share His love.
