Good Gone Bad
Find and offer some moldy bread or food (surely there is some in the pantry or fridge—the moldier the better) to your kids. For those who clean out their fridge or pantry too often, below are some steps to grow some mold.
- Collect dust on a cotton swab. You can slide the swab along a dusty shelf, floor, television set or any other surface with a thick coating of dust. Since dust contains the spores from which mold grows, you will want to collect as much dust as possible. (Mold spores exist in the air and can drop to the floor or onto objects as dust.)
- Rub the cotton swab over the entire surface of your bread slice, coating it with the dust. The moisture from the bread combined with the spores contained in the dust create an ideal breeding ground for mold. You can also drop a few sprinkles of water on the bread slice.
- Seal your bread in an airtight environment (in a sandwich bag or wrap it firmly in plastic wrap) to lock in the dust.
- Place your bread in a warm, dark environment to accelerate the growth process. For example, the website Science Fair Adventure recommends placing the bread in an old milk carton (preferably one with traces of milk still left behind) and sealing the lid. Leave the bread alone for approximately 24 to 48 hours and then remove.

Who’s the Strongest?
Play Tug of War with a twist. Mark a point on the floor or ground (with masking tape). Line up two family members (about the same size) on either end of the rope. Tell them to start pulling when you say go.
Ask:
Do you think God and the devil are in a battle?
Who do you think will win? Do you think the devil is as strong as God?
God is all-powerful; the devil is not. There is NO doubt who will win—GOD! Even though the devil is stronger than we are, he is NOT stronger than God.
Choose the smallest member of the family and put the rest of the family on the other end of the rope. Tug away. (This is a better picture of what is true about God and the devil.)
You knew that all of us would win, didn’t you? When God is on our side, we can win against the devil. God is in charge of the universe. Even though the devil fights against God, God will win. Some day there will be a final battle and the devil will be defeated for good. Jesus had authority over the devil and demons when He lived on earth. He only had to speak to them and they obeyed Him.

Run, Don’t Stick Around
Do a simple experiment to introduce the idea of running away from sin when tempted.
Items Needed: Bowl (cereal bowl is fine) with water covering the bottom; pepper; liquid dishwashing detergent; toothpick or matchstick
- Sprinkle some pepper over the water.
- Dip the toothpick into the detergent and place a drop of detergent in the middle of the water.
- What does the pepper do? (It runs away.)
Why does the pepper run away?
FYI: Water molecules are strongly attracted to each other and this creates surface tension. This is what allowed the pepper to float on top of the water. When you put the detergent in the water, it makes the surface tension weak. The water’s surface tension force is stronger than the detergent’s surface tension force, so the water pulls away from the soap and carries the pepper with it.
Just like the pepper “ran away” from the detergent, Christians should “run away” from sin. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 says, “Stay away from every kind of evil.” (NLT)
