Each year, Disability and the Church serves as a powerful reminder of why we do what we do—building inclusive, Gospel-centered communities where individuals with disabilities and their families are not just welcomed but truly belong. In episode 145 of the Key Ministry podcast, Sandra Peoples was joined by Kathy Kovalchuk, a first-time attendee and breakout speaker, to reflect on our experience at this year’s conference in Washington, D.C.

A New Location, a Familiar Spirit

For many of us, this year’s venue—McLean Bible Church—felt both fresh and nostalgic.

  • Spacious, well-designed layout allowed for seamless transitions between sessions and breakouts.
  • Personal connections to the space: Many attendees, including long-time ministry leaders, had memories of past summits held at McLean.
  • D.C. sightseeing perks: From Arlington Cemetery to the Museum of the Bible, the city offered inspiration beyond the conference walls.

“It felt like coming home in a new way,” Sandra shared.

Ministry Intensives: A Strong Start

Before the official kickoff, attendees had the option to join ministry intensives—deep dives into specific topics.

  • Three main tracks:
    • Trauma and healing (led by the Crosbys)
    • Mental health in ministry (led by Steve and Catherine)
    • Disability ministry foundations (co-led by Sandra and Beth)
  • Practical tools: Attendees left with handouts, binders, and actionable strategies.
  • Strong feedback: Many said it was worth the investment for the depth and clarity it provided.

Conference Highlights

High-Energy Opening & Genuine Worship

The main stage opened with vibrant energy—thanks in part to a crowd of college students. But the real impact came from the authenticity and vision of keynote speakers.

  • Larah’s keynote: A heartfelt, story-driven talk that cast a compelling vision for the weekend.
  • Worship: Powerful, Spirit-filled music that unified attendees from diverse backgrounds.

“It felt like we were just having coffee with Larah—so personal, so genuine.” —Kathy

Breakout Sessions with Real-World Impact

With a wide range of sessions, attendees had the opportunity to get equipped, encouraged, and engaged.

  • Kathy presented for the first time, focusing on real-life scenarios in ministry and practical problem-solving.
  • Eric Carter’s main stage session shared cutting-edge research on disability ministry’s impact on families and churches.
  • Attendee feedback: “One more tool in my toolbelt for Sunday.”

Reuniting and Connecting

Perhaps the most heartwarming element was the community—friends reunited, mentors met in person, and new relationships formed.

  • Notable connections:
    • Stephanie Hubach, longtime voice in the field
    • Lamar Hardwick, “the autism pastor”
    • Dozens of pastors and leaders from churches of all sizes
  • International presence: Ministry leaders from several countries added global perspective.
  • The ‘family reunion’ vibe: A unique sense of camaraderie and shared mission.

Encouragement for the Future

One of the most inspiring parts of this year’s gathering? The next generation of leaders.

  • Young attendees were eager to learn, grow, and lead.
  • More educational pathways (classes, certifications, degrees) are becoming available.
  • New small tour events are planned by Key Ministry to bring training closer to home.

“There is great hope and a great future for disability ministry.” —Kathy

Final Thoughts: Why This Matters

Disability ministry is hard, and many leaders feel isolated or overwhelmed. Conferences like Disability and the Church remind us:

  • We’re not alone.
  • We’re making a difference.
  • We’re called to this together.

From tools to relationships to encouragement, this gathering equips leaders to keep showing up each Sunday with renewed purpose and hope.
