Our Family

Make a family shield. Pass out copy or construction paper and markers and invite kids to draw a large shield. Divide it into sections and let kids draw interests and items associated with your family. Does your family love animals? enjoy sports? enjoy books? Love camping?

(Optional idea for older kids is to research the family name.)

What is the best thing about being part of this family?

Why is it important to live in a way that honors our family name?

Because of what Jesus did, we are now heirs, members of God’s family and will inherit all that God has for us. We should live in a way that honors His name.

The Bible Tells Me So

Review the Bible verse, Galatians 4:4-5 students are learning this month in D6 Curriculum. Write it out on a piece of construction paper. Read the verse together and discuss its meaning.

At just the right time, what did God do? (He sent His Son, Jesus, to redeem us so we could be part of His family.)

What does it mean to be under the law? (To keep God’s system of rules, the Ten Commandments, etc.)

Could we ever keep God’s laws? NO! We all sin. That’s why God sent His only Son, Jesus, to take away our sin. From the beginning, God’s plan was to send Jesus to take the punishment for our sin. Jesus had no sin but died on the cross for us. We were the guilty ones. We broke God’s law. Jesus rescued us and took the punishment for our wrongdoing. We are born into God’s family not because of our good works, but because of what Jesus did.

Choose one child to face away from the verse and choose another child to pick one word in the verse. Then the rest of the family will say the verse, except for that word—instead they will clap on that word. The one who was facing away from the verse will try to guess which word was left out. Take turns with different ones picking a word and guessing the missing word.

God made a wonderful plan, so we could be part of His family!

Celebrate! You’re His!

Celebrate SECOND birthdays—the day that a person is BORN/ADOPTED into God’s family. (Who wouldn’t love TWO birthdays a year?!)

As each child believes in and becomes a part of God’s family, write the date in a special place. Every year on that date, have a party to celebrate. Make a cake, give a gift (a book, CD, DVD, or something related to God, etc.), invite friends over, eat a special meal, and play games.

Ask the child with the SECOND birthday to share something they are glad that God has done for them. Say a special prayer of blessing over the “birthday” child.
