Power to Go!
Run a relay to introduce the idea of Paul and Barnabas being sent out to share the gospel. Send everybody to gather three items they would bring if they were going on a trip. Put these on a table. Place an opened suitcase on the floor on the other side of the room. Line up the kids and time them to see how quickly they can pick up an item, run and place it in the suitcase, run back to tag the next one in line who will do the same thing. (Everyone should go to the back of the line at the end of their turn so they can continue running.) Continue until all items are in the suitcase. Run it a second time to see if they can get ready faster.
God had a great adventure planned for Paul and Barnabas. It was God’s will that the people in many different cities learn about Jesus and Paul and Barnabas were willing to tell them.
The Power’s Out!
Designate a timeframe for your family to live as if the power is out in your home. Use no electricity. Talk about the many ways you depend on power each day. Challenge family members to identify the one thing they miss the most when the power is out. Play board games by candlelight or enjoy reading a book aloud together.
After a significant amount of time without power, read Romans 1:16 and thank God for the power of the Gospel and the fact that nothing can take that power away.
Slow Change
Do a simple experiment to show change.
Items Needed: White carnations (one per child); a glass half-filled with water for each carnation; food coloring (red, blue, and green); knife (you’ll need an adult for this)
Directions:
- Fill each glass about half way up with water.
- Add food coloring to each glass, about 10-20 drops to make a vibrant color. (More is better!)
- Cut each stem at an angle and place it in the glass.
- Check the carnations every few hours to see if anything is happening. (You might see some results in as little as two or three hours, but it may take up to a day to see full results.)
***This also works with celery, if flowers are not available.
What made the change in the color of the flower? (The food coloring we put into the water.)
Something was added to the water to make a change.
How can we change? In order for us to change and do the right things, we need God’s help. The power of the Gospel, through the Holy Spirit, changes us. It’s a slow process, but as we obey Him and His words in the Bible, we will be become more like Jesus.
