Monthly Virtue: Confidence—Living like you believe God is with you

Memory Verse: So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.” Hebrews 13:6a (NIV)

Week 1: May 7

Bible Story: All Around the World (The Great Commission and Ascension) • Matthew 28:16-20; Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:1-11

Bottom Line: Share God’s love with others.

Basic Truth: I am made for a purpose so I can tell people about God.

Askthe following questionsand lead the group to discuss:

  • Are there times when you don’t feel confident? If so, when?
  • What keeps you from feeling confident?
  • When was a time where you felt afraid to share God’s love?
  • How can you share God’s love? (Be sure to encourage kids to think of outside-the-box ways they can share God’s love. Remind them that this does not always have to be big or awkward or even risky. Sometimes the simplest ways speak the loudest!)
  • How does the way you live affect the way others see Jesus?

Week 2: May 14

Bible Story: Level Up (The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost) • Acts 2:1-41

Bottom Line: God sent the Holy Spirit to help you.

Basic Truth: I am made for a purpose so the Holy Spirit will help me do big things now

Askthe following questionsand lead the group to discuss:

  • When have you needed help?
  • When you need help, from whom do you typically seek help first?
  • How do you know when the Holy Spirit is guiding you?
  • Do you ever hesitate to rely on God for help? Why or why not?
  • How can believing the Holy Spirit is here to help you, build your confidence?

Week 3: May 21

Bottom Line: God is with you no matter what.

Basic Truth: I am made for a purpose so the Holy Spirit will help me do big things now

Askthe following questions and lead the group to discuss:

  • Why is it sometimes difficult to make decisions?
  • When have you felt under pressure?
  • How can believing God is with you give you confidence?
  • Is it easier to remember that God is with you when things are going well or when things are going badly?
  • What can you do to remind yourself that God is with you no matter what?

Week 4: May 28

Bible Story: All I Ask of You (Philip and the Man from Ethiopia) • Acts 8:26-40

Bottom Line: God is with you even when you have questions.

Basic Truth: I am loved by God no matter what so I can trust God to guide me.

Askthe following questionsand lead the group to discuss:

  • Can you think of a time when God found a way to answer a question you had?
  • Who do you talk to when you have questions?
  • Is it okay to question things we have always been taught?
  • What questions do you have?  (Do not be intimidated by this last question! As their Small Group Leader, you have a unique opportunity to give kids a safe place to ask questions that perhaps they would not feel comfortable asking a parent. Be aware of the potential open door for tricky discussion and be mindful of questions that should be answered with a temporary response of, “Let’s figure out a time to discuss that individually.” Also, remember this: you are not expected to have ALL the answers! Some things you might not know, and some questions actually don’t have definitive answers. It’s okay to tell kids exactly that.)
