DISCUSSION
Monthly Virtue: Friendship—Using your words and actions to show others you care
Memory Verse: A friend loves at all times. They are there to help when trouble comes. Proverbs 17:17 (NIrV)
Week 1: September 3
Bible Story: It Takes Two (Two People Are Better Than One) • Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Key Question: What makes someone a good friend?
Basic Truth: I am made by God to reflect His image (act like Him)
Spend some time coming together and talking about the Key Question. There aren’t any right or wrong answers, but use this time to help kids have a discussion about what they just learned and encourage them to grow in their faith. Try to keep the conversation spiritually based. Why does what we are talking about matter in light of what God has done for us?
- Key Question: What makes someone a good friend? (Answers will vary: someone who helps you make wise choices, some who comforts you when you’re sad or going through a hard time, someone who is also growing in their relationship with Jesus, etc.)
Week 2: September 10
Bible Story: Friends Forever (David and Mephibosheth) • 1 Samuel 19–20; 2 Samuel 9
Key Question: Who is a friend you can trust and why?
Basic Truth: I am made by God to reflect His image (act like Him)
Spend some time coming together and talking about the Key Question. There aren’t any right or wrong answers, but use this time to help kids have a discussion about what they just learned and encourage them to grow in their faith. Try to keep the conversation spiritually based. Why does what we are talking about matter in light of what God has done for us?
- Key Question: Who is a good friend you can trust and why? (Answers will vary: they give you good advice, they encourage you to keep your word, they don’t make break promises, they keep your secrets, they want the best for you even when it means telling you hard things, etc.)
Week 3: September 17
Bible Story: I’ll Stand by You (Barnabas and Saul) • Acts 9:26-30
Key Question: When have you seen someone stand up for someone else? How did it make a difference?
Basic Truth: I am made for a purpose so the Holy Spirit will help me do big things now.
Spend some time coming together and talking about the Key Question. There aren’t any right or wrong answers, but use this time to help kids have a discussion about what they just learned and encourage them to grow in their faith. Try to keep the conversation spiritually based. Why does what we are talking about matter in light of what God has done for us?
- Key Question: “When have you seen someone stand up for someone else? How did it make a difference?” (Answers will vary – but hear their answers and THEN ask, ‘why do you think God wants us to stand up for people?’ [James 1:27; Jesus gave us that example by having a compassionate heart for people who were far from God and not well liked, etc.])
Week 4: September 24
Bible Story: Please Forgive Me (Forgive One Another) • Colossians 3:13
Key Question: Why is forgiveness important?
Basic Truth: I am loved by God no matter what so I can belong in God’s family forever.
Spend some time coming together and talking about the Key Question. There aren’t any right or wrong answers, but use this time to help kids have a discussion about what they just learned and encourage them to grow in their faith. Try to keep the conversation spiritually based. Why does what we are talking about matter in light of what God has done for us?
- Key Question: Why is forgiveness important? (Answers will vary: we forgive because God forgave us first [Ephesians 4:32], if we don’t forgive it makes us hard and bitter on the inside, we can’t change anything by carrying a grudge, we can’t love God and love others if we are carrying a grudge, etc.)
