Special Needs Ministry Modified Elementary Curriculum:

Monthly Virtue: Responsibility—Showing you can be trusted with what is expected of you

Memory Verse: Suppose you can be trusted with something very little. Then you can also be trusted with something very large. Luke 16:10a (NIrV)

Week 1: January 7

Bible Story: I Want to Know What Love Is (Greatest Commandment) • Matthew 22:36-40

Key Question: What are things you’re responsible for? How can you love God or love others with those things?

Basic Truth: I am loved by God no matter what so I can love God, love others, and love life.

Ask:

  • What’s something little you have been trusted with?
  • What’s something large you were trusted with as a result of being trusted with something little?
  • Why are you more likely to be trusted with big things when you’ve shown you can be responsible with the small things?

Week 2: January 14

Bible Story: Never Enough (Bigger Barns) • Luke 12:13-21

Key Question: How can you use what you have to share God’s love with others?

Basic Truth: I am loved by God no matter what so I can love God, love others, and love life.

Ask: “Would anyone like to share a story with the group that tells a little about what God has done in their lives?”

  • It may take your prompting for the kids to think of a story to share.
  • For example, this could be a short story about how they made the decision to follow Jesus. But it could also be a story about a time when they could tell that God was helping them. Maybe they moved somewhere new, and God provided them with a friend. Or maybe they asked God to help them do their best during baseball tryouts and they made the team.
  • [Make It Personal] (Share your story with the group about how you came to have a relationship with Jesus. This should be brief, authentic, and also considerate of what may or may not be age appropriate. Or share about a time you felt God was with you.)

Week 3: January 21

Bible Story: Ants Marching (Ant and Sluggard) • Proverbs 6:6-8

Key Question: When have you had to work hard?

Basic Truth: I am loved by God no matter what so I can love God, love others, and love life.

Ask:

  • When have you had to work hard?
  • When can it be challenging to work hard?
  • Is there a certain kind of work you enjoy doing?
  • How do you react when no one notices your hard work?
  • How does our hard work show love to God and others?

Week 4: January 28

Bible Story: Say What You Need to Say (Use Words Wisely) • Ephesians 4:29

Key Question: Why do your words matter?

Basic Truth: I am made for a purpose so the Holy Spirit will help me do big things now.

Ask:

  • Why do your words matter?
  • Why is it so hard to undo the damage caused by harmful words?
  • Who can help us with our words?
  • When have you used words that helped someone?
