Connect the Dots
Item Needed: Dot-to-dot page (make a simple one by thinking of a simple design and drawing an outline of dots.)
Ask kids to complete the page.
Did you know what picture it would make when you started? (Probably not)
You were able to complete the picture by drawing from one dot to the next. In our lives, we can’t always understand why certain things happen, but God knows more than we do. We only have to do the next thing that He tells us (from the Bible) and He will work things together for our good. He sees the big picture and we can have faith that He will always do what’s right.
Will It Hold?
Items Needed: two chairs (one very sturdy and one broken or wobbly)
Show both chairs (if you don’t have a broken chair, ask kids to imagine one) and ask:
Which chair would you like to sit in? Why?
Which chair best represents our faith in God?
Some people think that our faith in God is like sitting in the broken chair. We try it (believing in Him) and hope that it holds us. God is like a sturdy chair – completely reliable. Millions of people have believed in God throughout history and have proved that He is true and trustworthy. (Ask a kid to sit in the chair.)
Would it be hard to sit for a while if you didn’t put your whole weight on the chair? (Ask a kid to hover just above the chair as if they are afraid to put their weight on it.) We show we have faith in God by completely trusting Him to care for us. It goes beyond just believing with our minds; it means being willing to pray to Him and trust Him to do what is right.
Is it Real?
Write some actions on slips of paper and act them out (without using words or sounds).
Some ideas to get you started:
Pretend that you are:
- Walking through a giant tub of Cool Whip
- Riding your favorite ride at an amusement park
- Washing the dog
- Eating an ice cream cone
- Laughing at a movie
- Sliding on a slip and slide in the backyard
- Playing basketball
- Catching a runaway snake
Was it harder to act out the actions or to guess the actions?
These actions gave us clues to help us guess what you were doing.
What do our actions tell others about us? (What kind of person we are; what we are really like; etc.)
Read James 2:14-18.
Our actions can tell others if we are a true Christian or if we are just pretending. God sends His Holy Spirit to live inside us to slowly change us to look more like Jesus. Others should be able to tell by our actions if we are part of God’s family with a sincere faith in Him.
