As the mother of an atypical kid, there are so many things in your world that you cannot control. You can’t control or change your kid’s diagnosis, how he’s treated at school, or how she develops. So much of what happens is out of your hands, and that’s a very difficult reality for most moms to accept.
Luckily, there are very specific ways moms of atypical kids can make peace with feeling out of control, so you can feel better and be the amazing mom your kid needs. Here’s how to get started:
- Learn as much as you can about your kid’s diagnosis. The more you know, the more in control you’ll feel of your child’s treatment.
- Talk about the diagnosis with your support system. I know it’s tempting to keep everything you’re feeling inside, but that’s actually the worst thing you can do. Talk about what’s going on. Verbalizing your worst fears often brings enormous relief.
- Create a mantra. Use it to remind yourself that no matter how bad things are in this moment, they will get better.
